Howard University’s swim team is making waves after their NEC Championship win last season—the first in 30 years! But this historic moment is about more than just titles. Head Coach Nicholas Askew and his squad are breaking stereotypes, shattering myths, and pushing for Black representation in competitive swimming, a space with deep-rooted racial barriers. With Howard being the only HBCU with a swim and dive program, this team is fighting to keep Black history alive in the pool while inspiring the next generation to dive in.
- Nicholas Askew, Howard’s head swim coach and alum, is dedicated to ensuring that Black athletes know they belong in aquatic spaces. With a mission to challenge the belief that "Black people don’t swim," he’s not just coaching for victories—he’s coaching for cultural change.
- Zuzu Nwaeze, a sophomore diver, chose Howard for its rich cultural environment and now helps lead the team in smashing both records and misconceptions about Black swimmers. Her personal connection to the team and Coach Askew’s leadership make Howard feel like home.
