Under the deal, OpenAI will support the Pentagon in everything from automating documents to building AI systems that defend, and potentially attack. This is OpenAI’s first major military contract under its new push into government and defense work. It also partners OpenAI with Anduril, the controversial defense contractor known for developing AI-powered drones and battlefield tech.
Why should you care? Because this tech isn’t just being used on the battlefield. It could touch your health data, legal records, and civil rights. And all of it is happening without a single public vote or meaningful law on the books. Congress is still sleeping, states may be banned from regulating AI under Trump’s “big beautiful bill,” and meanwhile, AI critics from artists to privacy watchdogs are in court trying to stop the machine.
