Haiti is always a fitting topic of discussion, but in late June, this became particularly true. The Department of Homeland Security announced that it would terminate legal protections for half a million Haitians. Days later, the Supreme Court shut down that plan. Regardless, the disrespect is never-ending!
Silver welcomes MarieYolaine Toms to the show, and they discuss the power, depth, and inspiration of Haïti and the country's resilient people, despite the abuse it receives from international communities.
MarieYolaine is the Founder and CEO of Community2Community (C2C), a service and development nonprofit that partners with vulnerable communities in Haïti. The organization’s point of origin? January 12, 2010. That is when a 7.2 magnitude earthquake devastated the country. In 35 seconds, more than 316,000 people lost their lives, and more than 1.5 million lost their homes. C2C rose to the occasion, led by MarieYolaine (pronounced MaReeYoLen).
C2C is dedicated to empowering local Haitian communities to thrive independently. It helps communities secure essential resources—clean water, nutritious food, safe shelter, reliable sanitation, and quality health care—through initiatives driven by local Haitian expertise and leadership. C2C believes there should be no need for constant foreign aid.
The two women also discuss MarieYolaine's role as a financial empowerment advocate who guides people in confronting their money trauma.
