Danielle Spencer, the great Dr. D, best known as Dee Thomas on the classic sitcom What’s Happening!!, has died at the age of 60 after a long battle with cancer.
Danielle made history at just eleven years old as the first Black girl to star regularly on a network television show. As Dee, she gave us wit, honesty, and a mirror of Black girlhood that felt real at a time when we rarely saw that on screen.
But her story didn’t stop in Hollywood. After her acting career, she became a veterinarian, dedicating her life to healing animals with the same brilliance and care she brought to her craft as a performer. She worked as a vet until her passing.
Her co-star Haywood Nelson remembered her as a “brilliant, loving, positive, pragmatic warrior” who will forever be embraced.
Danielle Spencer represented Black life, Black families, and the strength of Black girls everywhere. She was dope, she was pioneering, and she will be deeply missed.
