as posted by the channelIn episode 31 of ASCENDING, with host APRIL R. SILVER, we're discussing DAWA, the platform that invests in BIPOC community and culture. Led by founder, visionary, and musician JOHNATHAN 'CHAKA' MAHONE, the organization has distributed $425K to community frontliners in Austin, TX (i.e., teachers, social workers, healthcare providers, and service industry workers). From hip hop artist to nonprofit leader, Chaka's passion for progress is translating into direct relief for an entire community and he wants other visionaries to tap in.
In a short six years, DAWA has also created space for BIPOC podcasters, creatives, and grassroots organizations to produce high-quality media content...all at no cost. Plus, it has created artist education and economic initiatives to help recipients sustain their music careers.
This is all based in and for folks in Austin, Texas. Why don't we have more organizations like this across the country? If hip hop, the cultural context and principal framework for DAWA, is giving a leg up for Austin, can't we show up elsewhere? We'll talk about it all on ASCENDING.
