ASCENDING | The Maturation of Hip Hop: Family, Education, and Other Moments of Clarity

For episode 44, we’re staying on track with lifting up November as HIP HOP HISTORY MONTH. Our featured guest is TIMOTHY D. JONES, a pioneering force in the culture, especially at the intersections of hip hop, education, and youth development. Jones is a writer, trainer, educator, ordained minister, and pundit of hip hop culture and youth development. He is an adjunct professor at the Chadwick A. Boseman College of Fine Arts at Howard University, as well as a lecturer and Hip Hop Scholar in Residence at Teachers College, Columbia University. As a writer, he has authored the books: "Prayers Proverbs Parables: Daily Devotionals To Stay On The Narrow Path" and "Where Are We Going?" He has also contributed to the anthologies "Be A Father To Your Child: Real Talk from Black Men on Family, Love, and Fatherhood," "Souls of My Brothers," "HipHopEd: The Compilation of Hip-hop Education," and "The Bloomsbury Handbook of Hip Hop Pedagogy."

In 1992, this bona fide hip hop head -- born and raised in Brooklyn -- was one of the founders of The Cultural Initiative Inc., a student-led organization that developed and implemented the pioneering, first-of-its-kind annual hip hop conference at Howard University. He has helped pioneer hip hop as a teaching and prevention strategy tool by working with The Youth Popular Culture Institute and co-authoring Hip-Hop 2 Prevent Substance Abuse and HIV (H2P). H2P is the only hip hop based prevention program listed in the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Administration's registry.

Timothy is the Chief Visionary Officer of HipHopEd and a co-host of the "My Mic Sounds Nice" podcast. He is also the owner of Techniques4Learning LLC, a company committed to supporting organizations, colleges, and K-12 schools in youth development, staff training, and curriculum/activity content creation.
