Attack Helicopters Guided Rocket Pods

The APKWS or Advanced Precision Kill Weapon System is a guided version of the veteran 2.75-inch Folding Fin Aerial Rocket, an old-school rocket that has been in service since 1948. The original FFAR was created for air-to-air fighting but rapidly became a mainstay of the air-to-ground arsenal in Korea, Vietnam, and subsequent wars. It's especially effective from helicopter gunships. The basic version is the M-151 "ten pounder," so named because of its 10-pound high explosive warhead.

The basic 2.75-inch rocket is an "area weapon." That is, the rockets are ripple-fired in quick succession to blanket an area. You certainly could not hit a target as small as a vehicle from a fixed-wing plane with one rocket. The APKWS upgrade was designed as a simple way of turning this dumb rocket into a smart one.

The upgrade can be installed with simple tools. You unscrew the rocket's nosecone with a wrench, attach a new guidance section, and screw the nosecone on to the end, as shown in the video above. Viola, your old rocket is now a modern precision weapon capable of hitting a target illuminated by a laser spot with pinpoint precision from three miles away. It is not much of an exaggeration to describe the conversion process as "plug and play."
