13:04Now PlayingThe Tor-M2DT is a modern era self-propelled SAM system of Russian origin. It was developed due to a renewed Russian focus on the arctic region. This requires vehicles that can operate in these cold temperatures and snowy terrain. The Tor-M2DT uses the combat module of the latest generation Tor SAM system and mates this with an articulated all-terrain chassis. The DT-30PM-T1 chassis is a modernized and lightly armored variant of the DT-30P cargo carrier. This large vehicle has a very low ground pressure and significant cargo capacity compared to most other all terrain vehicles.
The Tor-M2DT can fire several types of surface to air missiles. These are launched vertically. The two bays can hold a total of 8 9M331 or 9M332 missiles or 16 of the newer 9M338 missiles. The 9M331 has 12 km maximum range and 6 km ceiling. The newer 9M338 can reach altitudes up to 10 km. The minimum engagement range is 1 km.
The Tor-M2DT has a modern tracking radar with 25 to 30 km range and rotates for a 360 degree coverage. The tracking radar has a 15 km range can covers the frontal arc of the turret. A FLIR tracker is fitted for operation in a high ECM environment. The firing computer can process 48 targets simultaneously and reportedly up to 4 targets can be engaged at the same time.
The articulated tracked chassis has a good all terrain performance, especially on soft ground. The drawback of the chassis is its low maximum speed on roads of only 45 km/h. The Tor-M2DT is powered by an 800 hp turbocharged diesel. The DT-30PM chassis is amphibious and the Tor-M2DT probably as well.
The Tor-M2DT has been adopted in small numbers by Russian forces for use in the northern and arctic regions. A total of 12 are known to have been ordered and delivered. Further acquisition is quite likely.
