A modern tank round consists of a projectile and cartridge. The cartridge is the shell and it consists of a cardboard like (it can be bent and deformed with improper handling) combustible cartridge wall wrapped around the propellant with a metal base at the end. Most of the cartridge burns up and the metal bit is ejected from the breech. The metal base doesn't take up much room and is not ejected with any significant force. Autocannons used by IFVs and the like have rounds that use metal cartridges and are usually ejected from an opening in the turret and dumped off the vehicle. Naval guns also eject the metal cartridges from their turrets to make the turret as compact as possible.

Mostly Western rounds are combustible case and the only part left is the metal base which ends up on the floor of the turret basket and you toss them out when you have the time. Though the old 105mm rounds before the switch to 120mm on the M1 were metallic cartridges and took up quite a bit of room if you didn't toss them out the loader's hatch. Russian tanks use an autoloader that automatically kicks the expended charge out a small hatch as part of the loading cycle.

Hope you enjoy!!
