The Uran-6 is a remote-controlled demining UGV built to safely clear landmines and unexploded ordnance. Originally based on a Croatian design, it’s equipped with a rotating flail and other interchangeable tools like tillers, rollers, plows, and even a robotic arm to detonate or remove mines.
Its armored hull uses hardened Hardox steel plates to survive blasts and resist small arms fire allowing the Uran-6 to neutralize explosives up to ~130 pounds of TNT equivalent without being destroyed.
Russia has deployed Uran-6 robots in conflict zones from Syria to Ukraine, including around Mariupol where the Uran-6 used heavy roller attachments to safely detonate mines. By removing mines and improvised traps, these robots help open roads and protect both troops and civilians. This technology can significantly reduce risk to Russian sappers (combat engineers) and save time in dangerous clearing operations.
However, the Uran-6 is not a battlefield panacea. It must be manually operated within a few hundred meters of the vehicle so it’s typically deployed only after an area is secured from enemy fire. The robot can also miss well-hidden or deeply buried mines, meaning human sappers still have to double-check cleared areas. In intense combat zones with artillery bombardments, operating a Uran-6 can be too risky for the crew, limiting its use to more controlled situations.
In fact, the Russian Army still relies mostly on traditional demining by soldiers, and it will be a while before robots like Uran-6 can even begin to replace the dangerous work of human engineers.
