A lot of folks are understandably comparing the Fall of Saigon to the Fall of Kabul
The Fall of Saigon refers to the capture of Saigon, the South Vietnamese capital, on April 30, 1975 by North Vietnam at the end of the Vietnam War. The Fall of Kabul refers to the capture of Kabul, the capital of Afghanistan, by Taliban forces on August 15, 2021.
Here are four quick similarities and three one difference between the two
Similarity #1
Both are ending the two longest wars in American history, The Vietnam War, and War in Afghanistan.
Similarity #2
The United States and allies didn’t see the falls of Saigon and Kabul happening so quickly. Similarity #3
We saw and have seen in both panic and chaos as Americans and American allies attempted and have attempted to flee.
Similarity #4
Those left in Saigon in 1975 and Kabul in 2021 feared for their lives.
Difference #1
It has been much more difficult to get Americans and American allies out of Kabul than it was Saigon for various logistical reasons.
There is still a lot to unfold in Afghanistan, but it’s already apparent that history is not repeating, but once again rhyming.
