How much water does it take to make one hamburger?

660 gallons of water.

That’s the equivalent of taking 47 showers.

If that answer surprised you, here’s how folks came up with it.

You see, it’s all about what’s known as the water footprint, which is how much water goes into producing something. This includes all fresh water consumed in the process, but also all water POLLUTED in the process. In the case of a hamburger, water is needed to grow the wheat for the bread. It’s also needed to grow the vegetables. Most importantly, water is needed to grow the grain and plants to feed the cow…and don’t forget the actual water the cow drinks. In other words, producing a hamburger requires a lot of resources.
