A Styrofoam cup will likely outlast the memories of us
Polystyrene foam, or what many of us call Styrofoam, can take up to one million years to break down. Why? Well because the atoms in it are bonded to each other strongly. Styrofoam has a lot of benefits. It’s durable, cheap, and keeps your food safe because it doesn’t grow mold or bacteria.
But because it doesn’t break down unless it’s out in the sun, a Styrofoam cup like this underground could be around longer than we are…like…as a species.
After all, humans have only been around 300,000 years, and it’s likely humans won’t be around in a million years, at least not as we are now. There will be new species. By that time, the Atlantic Ocean will be much bigger. Sea levels? Higher. There will be new mountain ranges and islands, but also islands that exist today will no longer exist.
A million years in the future, it’s very likely that the only reason why we know human beings existed is because we left Styrofoam behind.
