James Monroe as a stabilizing figure in a young republic. As president, he was well-respected by people with a wide range of different political beliefs. He brought Americans together, and due to this newspapers rarely criticized him. He was one of the few American presidents to remain very popular the entire time he was in office. I know it’s hard to imagine for Americans today, but his presidency marked a time when there was basically only one major political party in charge and everybody seemed ok with it. Heck, his time as president is still often known as The Era of Good Feelings.
