4:53Now PlayingJuly 17, 2015, Phoenix Arizona. This is a video of HipHop Artist Immortal Technique energizing and educating protesters in front of Arpaio's headquarters.
The protest was organized by Puente and joined by several hundred folks from NetRoots Nation who are also here this week.
Police estimated the crowd at about 500 strong while others are estimating it at a much higher number. Either way, it was huge, hot and diverse. The point of the protest was to bring attention to ICE still working with Sheriff Arpiao in his jails. Deportations of people who live, work and have families continue in Maricopa County and the DOJ either assumes people are as clueless as most presidential candidates are to the many human rights abuses inside Arpaio's jails or they don’t care.
People expressed frustration over the Department of Justice’s recent willingness to settle for large amounts of county taxpayer money instead of bringing
Arpaio to actual justice for his crimes. The DOJ claims to have been investigating Arpaio since 2007, but most of the work was done by local activists and the ACLU.
Immortal Technique is an immigrant himself who came to show solidarity. He spoke words rarely heard in one speech. His message was undeniable
and should be listened to by anyone who wants to understand what the never-ending immigration debate is really about. That is why I decided to do one video with him only.
His talk is unedited. I highly recommend sharing this video with those who might not understand what this struggle really means.
