“You saw with your own eyes who Yusor, Deah, and Razan were, what they stood for. The peace, the justice, the service orientation. And that by the time I landed in North Carolina to hear that the statement was, this was a parking dispute. I mean, I’ve lived in this country long enough to know about the 24 hour news cycle, and that was the soundbite. I wasn’t going to let that happen.”
Dr. Suzanne Barakat, whose brother and his wife and sister-in-law were killed in a hate crime in Chapel Hill, NC ten years ago, discussed what gave her the courage to speak out despite her immense grief at the time, as chronicled in “36 seconds: A Hate Crime”, a documentary film by Tarek Albaba.
