In May, we released our acclaimed investigative documentary ‘Who Killed Shireen?’ that uncovered the identity of the Israeli soldier who killed Al Jazeera correspondent Shireen Abu Akleh. Six months later, the ripple effects of our film continue to make waves as one of its key anonymous sources finally steps out from the shadows.

Steve Gabavics, a retired US Army Colonel and military policeman, who was the only US military official at the time to carry out an on-the-ground US examination of Shireen’s killing in the occupied West Bank in 2022, joins Mehdi in an exclusive, remarkable, and in-person interview that details the Biden administration’s complicity in the cover-up of her murder.

Gabavics tells Mehdi “there was not a significant effort by the US government” to find Shireen’s killer, adding that the US was “not willing to have them [Israel] hold responsibility for killing an American because we [US] did not want to upset the apple cart, shall we say, between the relationships between Israel and the United States.”

Gabavics’ testimony of the Biden Administration’s handling of Shireen’s case is crucial for many reasons, namely the fact that his initial assessment reflected what he saw on the ground: that the killing of Shireen – a journalist clearly identified with a press jacket and helmet – was intentional, and it was carried out by the Israeli military and not Palestinian gunmen (as the Israeli government falsely claimed at the time).

Gabavics’ assessment was rejected, and in its place, the word of the Israeli military’s Central Command head, Gen. Yehuda Fox, became the mainstream narrative.
