God is Love or Love is God?: How Progressive Christians and New Agers Have it Wrong

1 John 4:16-18 says: "So we have come to know and to believe the love that God has for us. God is love, and whoever abides in love abides in God, and God abides in him. By this is love perfected with us, so that we may have confidence for the day of judgment, because as he is so also are we in this world. There is no fear in love, but perfect love casts out fear. For fear has to do with punishment, and whoever fears has not been perfected in love."

This scripture (and many others) I saw misused to promote a type of unbalanced spiritual love that was seen as a sort of 'power'. Love was a frequency, a vibration, that was obtained by how you felt and what you thought. The enemy to love was fear and judgment. There were many times that I was told things like, "God is love! There's no fear in love. Look! It's even in the Bible!" and this scripture among many others was shown to me to make it seem that this is what Jesus taught and what these new thought/new age teachers taught was indeed correct.

But are they?
