The tragedy of the Library of Alexandria: ancient knowledge destroyed in fire.
The Library of Alexandria was one of the most important collections of knowledge in the ancient world. A cultural and intellectual centre, it was rumoured to contain half a million scrolls, including works by Plato, Aristotle, Homer and Herodotus. Some of the most brilliant minds of the period worked, studied and taught there.
However, ancient sources describe a terrible fire, that destroyed the library and lost all of this knowledge forever...
So what happened?
In this video, I go through what we know about the Library, theories on how and by whom it was destroyed, and then discuss any possible lessons that we can learn in the modern day.
Let me know what you think in the comments, and thank you for watching!!
