How good can a person get at something? Not "pretty good." Not "good enough." I mean frighteningly good.

In this clip from my conversation with card mechanic and magician Jason Ladanye, we wander into a world most of us assume only exists in movies—a world where a deck of cards becomes a weapon, a language, a science, and occasionally, a felony. Jason explains how professional card cheats track aces through legitimate shuffles, spot microscopic flaws in playing cards, and exploit casino vulnerabilities most people never knew existed.

At what point does expertise start looking like witchcraft? I watched him shuffle, cut, deal, track, predict, and generally dismantle my confidence in objective reality with nothing more than a standard deck of Bicycle cards. The thing that struck me wasn't the magic. It was the work. Because whether you're running a machine shop or learning how to control a deck of cards with surgical precision, the formula is remarkably similar: become so good they can't ignore you.

Jason has done exactly that. And if you're still convinced he made a deal with the Devil by the end of this clip, well... I can't honestly say you've reached the wrong conclusion. Watch the full conversation and see for yourself.
