10:46Now PlayingDr. Philip Ovadia has performed more than 3,000 heart surgeries, and he has a habit of questioning things most of us have been told to accept without much debate. In this clip, he makes a claim that's guaranteed to ruffle a few feathers: meat is medicine.
Fine. You've heard bold claims before.
What stopped me wasn't the slogan. It was the story behind it. Dr. Ovadia's co-author was a committed vegan when they wrote his first book together. When Phil looked at his blood work, he suggested something the guy couldn't imagine doing—start eating meat. The answer was an immediate "No." A few years (and a few more blood tests) later, that answer changed. Whether you think that's evidence or heresy, it's hard to ignore.
You don't have to agree with him. But if a heart surgeon who's spent his career opening chests says the conventional wisdom got it backwards, it's probably worth hearing him out.
If nothing else, you'll never look at the meat aisle—or the produce aisle—the same way again.
