While Laura E. Naplin holds the distinction of being the first-elected female state senator, chosen to fill her late husband's seat, Senator Brataas was the first woman who decided to run for the office without family affiliation and was elected, as she once described, "in her own right."
Senator Nancy Brataas was a Republican member of the Senate, representing the Rochester area. While she was alive, Republican women Senators came to hold all the major leadership posts in the institution: Senate Majority Leader, Senate President, Chair of the Senate Taxes Committee and Chair of the Senate Finance Committee.
Senator Nancy Brataas passed away Thursday, April 17, 2014. She was 86 years old.
