Sponsored by Senator David Osmek, R-Mound, the bill raises penalties for distracted driving and texting while driving, and it also launches an informational effort to discourage distracted driving.
For texting while driving, the bill establishes a mandatory $150 fine for a first offense, a $300 fine for a second offense and a $500 fine for a third or subsequent offense.
Negligent operation of a motor vehicle while using a wireless communications device in any manner other than in hands-free mode would result in penalties rangeing from a gross misdemeanor to a ten-year felony depending on the harm caused.
