41:18Now PlayingTarek Tomes, the current Chief Innovation Officer and former Chief Information Officer for the City of St. Paul, was selected to lead the state's IT services (MNIT). Governor Walz made the announcement Tuesday, April 16, at a State Capitol media event.
Tomes served as Assistant Commissioner of IT Services before assuming his current role in St. Paul. He will assume his new position Monday, April 29.
MNIT has been under extensive scrutiny as a result of the failed rollout of the state's licensing and registration system, MNLARS. The legislature is preparing to create an oversight commission to more aggressively monitor state IT functions and security. Funding of state cyber security efforts is an ongoing conversation at the State Capitol, especially when former proposed funds failed to be enacted due to unsuccessful budget negotiations in 2018.
