7:29Now PlayingIn a marathon floor session Wednesday, April 14, the Senate passed three major funding bills that represent the Republican position for budget negotiations with the DFL-controlled House of Representatives and Governor Tim Walz. The omnibus higher education; commerce and energy; and agriculture, rural development bills cleared the Senate on divided votes and will be negotiated during forthcoming conference committees.
Proposals requiring tuition reduction at Minnesota State and the University of Minnesota, lifting the moratorium on nuclear power development and expanding rural broadband were among the many different issues debated and discussed for nearly eight hours. Several DFL efforts to amend the bills failed to win the necessary support before the measures were sent to the House of Representatives for their consideration. The Senate is expected in the coming days to act on nearly a dozen additional budget bills, ranging from health and human services to transportation.
