7:25Now PlayingHousing policy changes that seek to improve access to home ownership and increase affordable housing units were highlighted during the Senate’s omnibus housing budget bill debate Tuesday, April 20. According to the bill’s author, Senator Rich Draheim, R-Madison Lake, the $115 million budget bill sets home ownership as the goal while noting that Minnesota lacks 50,000 housing units. “We put together a bill that tries to overcome some of the housing gaps that we have in Minnesota,” he said.
Members of the DFL spoke in support of aspects of the bill, but they also criticized the scope as being too small. DFL Housing Lead Kari Dziedzic, DFL-Minneapolis, said, “This isn’t a bad bill, but it is not meeting the moment.” S.F. 969 / H.F. 1077 passed on a vote of 39-27 and will be negotiated with the House in a conference committee.
