11:30Now PlayingAn amendment to remove a provision requiring that abortion facilities obtain a license failed to gain approval during debate over the Senate Health and Human Services omnibus funding bill Thursday, April 29. Senator Ann Johnson Stewart, DFL-Wayzata, argued that the proposed licensure added an unnecessary regulation to a very safe procedure while many other procedures, like wisdom teeth removal and LASIK eye surgery, are performed in facilities that do not require additional regulations.
Senator Michelle Benson, R-Ham Lake, chair of the Health and Human Services committee, said the licensing requirement matches those for birth centers and will offer further safety and protection to women undergoing reproductive health procedures.
