26:34Now PlayingCiting the largest student funding formula increase in 15 years, Senator Roger Chamber, R-Lino Lakes, and Senate Majority Leader Paul Gazelka, provided the media with a general overview of the education budget agreement and the status of budget negotiations during a Senate floor recess Tuesday, June 22.
According to Chamberlain, the bill increases per pupil funding by 2.5 percent in FY 2022 and 2 percent in FY 2023. It provides additional funding for recruiting, hiring and mentoring teachers of color and American Indian teachers. It also adds funding for the LETRS training program, which helps students learn to read. The bill further provides funding for mental health through suicide prevention grants and instruction about healthy digital media habits.
Leader Gazelka provided several clues about an future agreement with Governor Walz and Speaker Melissa Hortman that would include provisions not present in current budget agreements.
