1:20:10Now PlayingThe Frontline Worker Pay Working Group advanced two competing proposals Wednesday, October 27, that would allocate $250 million in bonus pay for workers who were on the frontlines during the pandemic.
The first proposal supported by the DFL and administration members of the working group proposes a minimum disbursement of $375 in tax-free hero pay to anyone who qualifies for the award. The proposal recognizes workers in retail, food service, manufacturing, social services, the courts as well as health-related fields.
The second proposal advance by the panel and supported by the GOP members of the working group members proposes $1200 in tax-free bonuses to workers in health care, long-term care, emergency services and corrections.
Co-chair Ryan Winkler, DFL-Golden Valley, proposed a stand-alone measure, which would have allocated about $600 to workers recognized in the GOP proposal and $300 to workers in the other industries. Winker's motion to move the stand-alone, compromise measure failed to win support of the group.
Governor Tim Walz and legislative leaders would need to reach a compromise on the DFL and GOP proposals before a special session is called.
