36:33Now PlayingSenate Transportation Chair Scott Newman, R-Hutchinson, featured a proposal Tuesday, February 22, that would dedicated all of the sales tax revenue from auto repair part sales to future road and bridge repairs. According to Newman, the bill would raise an additional $314 million in 2023; $324 million in 2024 and $336 million in 2025. Prior to 2017 all of the revenue from auto parts and service was dedicated to the general fund. Currently, only a portion of the sales revenue--about $145 million per year--is dedicated to transportation.
Newman warned that gas tax revenue will wane in the coming years as cars become more energy efficient and electric vehicle sales increase. He said his proposal is a necessary tool to leverage federal infrastructure dollars for pending road and bridge repairs.
