42:19Now PlayingThe Senate Higher Education Committee gave its unanimous support Tuesday, March 8, to a bill providing $20 million for the advancement of Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) research. Sponsored by Senator David Tomassoni, I-Chisholm, who contracted the disease in 2021, and carried by Senator Tom Bakk, I-Cook, the bill was sent to the Senate Finance Committee and will be considered by the Senate Thursday, March 10.
Former Minnesota Twins Player Kent Hrbek, who lost his father to ALS and has actively raised about $25 million in funds for research through golf, fishing and snowmobile events, said, "To get this bill passed, the amount of money you are talking about -- the $20 million dollars -- I jumped on the bandwagon right away, let me tell ya."
During the emotional hearing, Senators relayed stories of family members and friends who were lost to ALS. Senator Bakk said, "This might seem like a small way today, but we might look back on this ten years from now and say this was a remarkable move that the State Senate initiative we moved forward today."
