3:16Now PlayingThe Senate Finance Committee advanced to the floor the omnibus education finance bill, which focuses on improving students reading proficiency by third grade. Specifically, the bill appropriates $30 million for the professional development of elementary school teachers in reading instruction.
Education chair and bill sponsor Roger Chamberlain, R-Lino Lakes, said that by focusing on reading, better student educational outcomes would result. "Maybe if we put aside all this other stuff, and do what we all say we really want to do, and address those children and help those educators, we wouldn't be where we are at today," he said.
"The priority seems to be certain tax cuts rather than education," Senator John Marty, DFL-Roseville, said in criticizing the level of funding in the bill. He argued that the schools need state support in covering special education costs in addition to the literacy improvement focus.
