50:16Now PlayingA bill directing $65 million to aid Minnesotans in purchasing homes gained the Senate's support Wednesday, April 27, following extensive debate on preventing rent control ordinances.
Sponsored by Housing Chair Rich Draheim, R-Madison Lake, the bill provides funding to assist potential homeowners in securing mortgages, construct housing for workers; and promote cooperative ownership of manufactured housing parks.
The bill also would prohibit cities from enacting rent control ordinances. An amendment offered by Senator Ann Rest, DFL-New Hope, to remove that provision failed to win Senate support on a 33-34 vote, following lengthy, feisty debate.
The Housing bill is part of the omnibus agriculture and broadband bill, and the differences between the Senate and House measures will be addressed in a forthcoming conference
