4:50Now PlayingWith California’s recent adoption of clean car standards that would eliminate the sale of new gas-powered vehicles by 2035, a key Senate committee held an informational hearing Monday, October 3, to review Minnesota’s car emission goals. The Minnesota Pollution Control Agency (MPCA) has adopted the Minnesota Clean Car Standards, which remain in effect through 2024.
According to MPCA Commissioner Katrina Kessler, the Minnesota Clean Car Standards, “do not require any individual dealer to have EVs on their lot. Clean Cars Minnesota is not making Minnesotans purchase a new EV. It is not outlawing internal combustion engines…it is simply giving Minnesotans more choices, supporting our EV businesses and reducing our greenhouse gas emissions.”
Senator Justin Eichorn, R-Grand Rapids, questioned whether MPCA would eventually adopt California-style standards, thus eliminating the use of combustion engines. Kessler responded that the agency is not adopting rules that mirror the new California standards and is focused on an approach “that makes sense for the state of Minnesota.”
