42:34Now PlayingWith bipartisan support, the Senate approved a measure intending to deter catalytic converter theft in Minnesota. Sponsored by Senator John Marty, DFL-Roseville, HF 30 would require that a catalytic converter that has been removed from a vehicle be marked with the vehicle’s VIN. The measure also establishes criminal penalties for the unauthorized possession or purchase of catalytic converters.
Some Republican members argued that the bill would not be effective at preventing theft. They failed to win the Senate's support to establish annual reporting on catalytic converter thefts and to create a multi-jurisdictional law enforcement task force to pursue thieves.
The bill passed Thursday, March 2, on a 40-25 vote.
