In Chennai, a government agency plans to axe over 1 lakh trees in ECR stretch that are the city's last line of defense against the violent sea. The govt-run Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments Department wants to chop these down to generate revenue. Planted in 2005 by the forest department after the devastating Tsunami, these trees were scientifically believed to reduce the velocity of Tsunami waves in future.
