32:15Now PlayingAmitabh Kant, CEO of National Institution for Transforming India or NITI Aayog, on Thursday, sparked a fresh controversy by commenting on the ongoing Lok Sabha elections by proposing that voting should be made compulsory in India and that defaulters should be fined. Citing the example of Australia, where he claimed that those who do not vote are fined $20 in the country and the failure of which could lead to imprisonment, Kant said that “it is worth a try” in India.
'Voting is our moral duty, but it will be very difficult to enforce it legally. We should aim at improving the social consciousness and the public-spiritedness' says Aryama Sundaram, Senior Advocate.
