On The Big Story today, Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated India's first submarine optical fibre connectivity connecting Chennai and Port Blair. The undersea optical fibre will help in boosting internet connection and telecom services leveraging the local economy and demand.

India has now joined a select group of companies that have successfully implemented underwater optical fibre connectivity. The project cost around Rs 1,224 crore, the project's design life is stated for 25 years with the length of cable at 2,300 kilometres. The capacity of each pair is 6.4TB of data per second. The inauguration is pathbreaking and it will give a huge impetus to connectivity and communication with Andaman and Nicobar islands.
