Occupancy of these trains is between 1 per cent to 9 per cent
Since Covid -19 pandemic, Ganesh Chaturthi is the first such critical festival in Maharashtra that sees large scale movement of people to their native. Every year, there is a huge rush of people going to Konkan in these trains. For the first time ever, trains are hardly filling.
WHY LOW DEMAND FOR KONKAN SPECIAL TRAINS?
- Bookings of the trains have started from August 15 and the first train left on the same night. If passengers have left in the first train itself, they would require to quarantine themselves for 7-10 days which makes them spend their entire festival restricted to their homes
- Till August 12, more than 11000 passengers were carried in State transport buses to Konkan. Others went using their personal vehicles. A major share of devotees has already left for Konkan
- Starting August 12, Covid test compulsory for passengers before boarding a bus from Mumbai to Konkan. This has further dissuaded many from going there.
