The backlash for the biopic stems from the cricketer’s views on the 2009 killings against Tamilians. According to the protestors, Muttiah Muralitharan’s comments were in favour of the accused, who were held responsible for the killings. This has led to many people from the industry and netizens on Twitter asking Vijay Sethupathi to drop out from the film.
Narayan Lakshman, Associate Editor of The Hindu, commented on the following. This is Tamil chauvinism, he said. He also continued to say that this is fuelled by election pressure, and is the shortest route to curb artistic freedom.
Kasthuri Shankar, an actor, commented in support of Vijay Sethupathi. She said, “Let's not fool ourselves that this is only the question of artistic freedom. I am an artist and I completely support and trust Vijay Sethupathi’s judgement about the movie.
