On The Urban Debate today, Sahar Zaman discusses a controversy revolving around the approval of Bharat Biotech’s COVID-19 vaccine ‘Covaxin’. A day after DCGI approved emergency usage of two Coronavirus vaccines Serum Institute’s ‘Covishield’ and Covaxin’, multiple questions are being raised, especially by the opposition parties, on why Covaxin was given the green signal despite being under Phase three trial. Countering the allegation, Bharat Biotech’s Director gave back a scathing reply and claimed that all vaccine data is available on public domain.
While sharing views on the controversy, Dr. Om Shrivastav, Director of Jaslok Hopsital & Research Centre says that ‘As of now most of the COVID-19 Vaccines are approved only for emergency use. Whatever data companies are suggesting should stand scientific scrutiny’.
Whereas Dr Subramanian Swaminathan, Director Infectious diseases Gleneagles Global says ‘When the medical fraternity gets jittery about a vaccine, it's going to be really bad. Don't understand why are we in hurry, our COVID numbers are at record low’.
