The Major Dhyan Chand Khel Ratna Award, which was originally named after former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi, will now be named in honor of one of the greatest hockey players of all time. Following the men's hockey team's bronze medal success at the Olympics, Prime Minister Narendra Modi stated he has received several requests from citizens across India to name the Khel Ratna Award after Major Dhyan Chand. Major Dhyan Chand, who was recognized for his incredible goal-scoring skills, was instrumental in India's three consecutive gold medal victories at the Olympics in 1928, 1932, and 1936. In India, his birthday, August 29, is celebrated as National Sports Day
