The National Medical Commission (NMC) of India, a body that governs medical education, has been putting forward proposals for change in the oath taken by Indian medical students. This oath, which is usually recited during graduation ceremonies or entrance examinations into medical colleges, was proposed to be replaced with the “Charaka Shapath”—a pledge mentioned in one of the two traditional Indian texts on medicine.
