6:00Now PlayingChief minister Uddhav Thackeray has approved a proposal seeking “Ramsar site” status for Thane Creek, including the Thane Creek Flamingo Sanctuary. The proposal will now be forwarded to the union ministry for environmental forests and climate change for final approval. A Ramsar site is a designated wetland under the Ramsar Convention, also known as the Convention of Wetlands. An area of approximately 65 square km of Thane Creek is proposed to be identified as the Ramsar area. While 17 square km is reserved forest, the remaining 48 square km was notified as an environmentally sensitive area in October last year.
