The bill was drafted and presented in the assembly amid various tussles between Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee and Governor Jagdeep Dhankar. BJP MLAs opposed the bill, still state education minister Bratya Basu presented the West Bengal University Laws (Amendment) Bill, 2022 in the House. He said there is "nothing wrong" with the chief minister taking over as the chancellor. BJP alleged that appointing the chief minister as chancellor would lead to direct political interference in the state's higher education system.
