Lt. General Anil Puri explained that the Agnipath scheme was designed after considering various factors including exit and entry avenues of various countries, retirement ages, etc. The scheme has been designed to create an ideal mix of youthfulness and experience in the armed forces, he added. Soon after announcing that there will be no rollback of the Agnipath Scheme amid protests against the new military recruitment programme, Anil Puri on Sunday urged the youth to "start preparing" instead of "wasting their time" by taking to the streets.

In a recent move, the Ministry of Home Affairs had announced a 10% reservation for Agniveers, the candidates recruited under the Agnipath scheme in the Central Armed Police Forces (CAPF) and Assam Rifles.
