3:26Now PlayingA breaking news coming in from the National Capital where Amnesty International and its CEO Aakar Patel have received show cause letters from the Enforcement Directorate (ED) for allegedly breaking the terms of the Foreign Exchange Management Act (FEMA). The company and its previous leader, Aakar Patel, were both fined Rs. 51.72 crore and Rs. 10 crore respectively by the financial investigation agency. An SCN issued to M/s Amnesty India International Pvt. Ltd. (AIIPL) and its CEO Aakar Patel for violating the terms of FEMA has been adjudicated by the ED's adjudicating authority. According to the federal agency, it took action against the two after learning that Amnesty International, UK had been funnelling a "huge amount" of foreign contributions through its Indian entities (non-FCRA companies) using the FDI route in order to circumvent the Foreign Contribution Regulation Act (FCRA) and increase its NGO activities in India.
