Today, the Supreme Court granted regular bail to Dr P Varavara Rao, an activist and poet accused in the 2018 Bhima Koregaon violence case, citing medical reasons. The court ordered Rao not to leave the jurisdiction of the relevant trial court without the agreement of the trial court, not to misuse his liberty, and not to contact any witnesses. The Supreme Court decided that Rao has the right to choose his medical care and must keep the NIA informed of any such treatment.
Anand Verite, an activist, and filmmaker stated, "This bail sends a great message throughout the country, including to the courts themselves."
"This is a significant step forward for others as well," says Senior Advocate Flavia Agnes of the Supreme Court's decision to give bail to campaigner Varavara Rao.
