Before the violence, the High Court of Madras rejected the party leader K Palaniswami's request to receive the office's keys. Panneerselvam's request that he be given custody of the party headquarters had been rejected by the court. To prevent more conflicts, it had also instructed the party members to refrain from visiting the headquarters for a month. Following the AIADMK general council meeting where EPS was elected as the party's interim general secretary, the party's premises were locked due to a violent altercation between OPS and EPS supporters.
