General Qamar Javed Bajwa's replacement, Lt Gen Munir, is set to retire on November 29. Lt Gen Munir has been named as the new army leader, according to Pakistan's information minister Marriyum Aurangzeb, who also noted that PM Sharif has named Lt Gen Sahir Shamshad Mirza as the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Committee in addition to Lt Gen Munir as the COAS (CJCSC). General Bajwa, the departing army commander, was was scheduled to leave his position in 2019. However, only a few months before he was set to leave office, the previous prime minister, Imran Khan, extended his term by an additional three years. The Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) has repeatedly rejected any such plans, despite claims in Pakistani media that General Bajwa has requested another extension. The new army chief of Pakistan was appointed at a time when the nation is experiencing a severe political crisis. Many people think that Imran Khan's long march, the former prime minister, and the Army's shift of command are related.
